Doctoral Studies

Post-Graduate students, passing their CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) exam (http://www.ugc.ac.in/inside/net.html), are welcome to join Doctoral Programmes of the institute. Such students are designated as ‘Junior Research Fellows (JRF)' and/or ‘Senior Research Fellows (SRF)' and get stipend for a fixed period and other allowances directly from CSIR-UGC. Post-doctoral candidates are designated as Research Associates (RA). More information about this can be obtained from CSIR's website (http://csirhrdg.res.in/). So far over 100 Ph.D. theses have been completed at NIO.

Presently the Ph.D. courses are offered only for students admitted to School of Oceanography under AcSIR-program (see School of Oceanography)". However, there are large number of NIO-students (NET qualified and experienced Project Assistants) who have registered for Ph.D. with other institutions and universities. Such students need to accomplish courses/examinations of the respective universities. NIO does not offer any other degree courses except for AcSIR-Ph.D. Program.

Procedure for joining NIO:

  1. The candidates who have been awarded any of the above fellowships may approach any of the scientists at NIO (see Research>researchers on this website) suiting to their interests. The HRDG at NIO (banakar@nio.org), if approached, can also be of help to do this task. Candidates are encouraged to visit the laboratory for discussions with prior confirmation from HRDG. They will be paid TA/DA as per existing rules.
  2. Once the Supervisor/Research Guide has been identified and the topic for work is decided, the candidate may apply formally to The Director, NIO (through HRDG) with a recommendation of the proposed supervisor/ Research Guide, along with a copy of the CSIR certificate of the fellowship and mark sheets.
  3. The Director, NIO will formally approve the proposal and offer the position to the candidate. The relevant papers are then sent to CSIR for further processing.
  4. The NET-LS candidates need to get funding support from the projects before applying to register for Ph.D. Either they can enter in a project as Project Assistant-III through walk-in-interviews (see vacancies>temporary) as and when advertised and then register for Ph.D., or find out the availability of a JRF position for NET-LS category in a suitable project by contacting the project leader. In any of the above cases the offer will be through advertisement (in local newspapers and on this website) and followed by an interview.
