CSIR Program on Youth for Leadership in Science 2011

In order to build up the scientific temper at an early age and to instill a sense of pride in the achievements of Indian science, the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) has implemented a unique ‘hand holding’ efforts by adopting CSIR Program on Youth for Leadership in Science (CPYLS). NIO coordinates and organizes this annual program under outreach activities. Every year top one hundred and fifty students at the secondary school examination (X class) from CBSE, ICSE, and Goa State Boards were invited to visit NIO for ‘two Open Days’ on 29th and 30th December 2011, along with one of their parents/guardian/teacher.

This year, 48 students and 35 parents/teachers students from 43 schools from all over Goa attended the CPYLS 2011 program. This two-day program integrated popular science lectures, audio visual presentation and visit to different laboratories to help students get acquainted with the R&D activities of NIO. The faculty lectures and visit to laboratories led by eminent scientists, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students were designed to arouse an interest in science in the students so as to take up science as a career in the future. Elocution competition and interaction with the scientist were also a part of the program. Prizes were distributed to students for the best science question and the best speaker.
The program was a huge success and the students expressed satisfaction and gratefulness for the opportunity given to them by NIO and CSIR to attend this program.
