Professor Kazuhiro Kogure, as NIO Adjunct Scientist
Professor Kazuhiro Kogure, currently Director of Center for Earth Surface System Dynamics, and Head of Marine Microbiology, Marine Ecosystem Dynamics at the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, the University of Tokyo Japan has been chosen as one of the NIO Adjunct Scientists for three years. During this year he would be at NIO from 4 to 18 September 2010. He has, to his credit, pioneering developments of new techniques to study microbes, bacteria in particular, from native aquatic environments. Prof. Kogure's research on the measurement of metabolically active fractions of marine bacteria (which are about <10% of the possible 1 million cells in a milliliter seawater), genome analyses of the deepsea and offshore strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which incidentally bear remarkable genotypic similarity with well know human pathogenic/clinical strains. His leading researches on elucidation of substrate capture mechanisms in native bacteria, microbiology of submicron particles, and very recently, characterization of proteorhodopsin in surface dwelling bacterial flora have earned him, and his team at the ORI, the prestige as highly significant contributions in the arena of marine microbiology.

During his stay at NIO this year, Prof. Kogure has also kindly consented  to give two seminars (one on the 9th September 2010 at 16:00 hrs in Cardium; the other on the 16th September 2010 at 16:00 hrs in the Seminar Hall). All those interested are invited. Besides, anyone interested in interacting with him, individually or in group, may avail this opportunity. Contact: Dr. N. Ramaiah (email: ramaiah@nio.org) for necessary arrangements.
