NIO's Autonomous Vertical Profiler bags NRDC award
NRDC Meritorious Innovation Award for the year 2010 has been conferred to the NIO's technology 'Autonomous Vertical Profiler'. This is the second consecutive year NIO's technology has been awarded. The Prize Award Committee at its final meeting has awarded Rs. 5.00 Lakhs under the category Innovation Award of the Year 2010.

Since last few years the scientists at this institute were working on developing an Autonomous Vertical Profiler (AVP). AVPs traverse along the water column without the aid of a tether or a guiding mechanism, programmed to descend at a designated speed up to a defined depth and ascend slowly to the sea surface without power. This AVP has a capacity to send data via satellite.

The technology development team comprised of Elgar Desa (Project Leader), R. Madhan, Gajanan Navelkar, Nitin Dabholkar, Sivanand Prabhudesai, Antonio Mascarenhas and Sanjeev Afzulpurkar, and with the support of Pramod Maurya, Vimla Damodaran, Surekha Nagvekar, Anil Shirgaunkar, Mathew Dias and the Project Assistants. This project was funded by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, New Delhi.
