   National Geoscience Award 2010 to 3 NIO Scientists  
Shri G.C. Bhattacharya, Dr. K.S. Krishna and Dr. A.K. Chaubey from NIO, besides other 6 from NGRI (another CSIR laboratory) and NCAOR have been received the National Geoscience Award 2010 by the Minisstry of Mines. Govt. of India. The award is for the team in recognition of their contribution for 'Delineation of outer limits of extended continental shelf of India'. This important work had helped India in providing the science behind India’s claim to extend its present limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the marine area over which India enjoys special rights for exploration and exploitation (our present area is ~2 million sq. km.). The Ministry of Mines, Government of India had initiated a 'National Mineral Awards' Scheme in the year 1966. The scope of the awards scheme has been expanded and changed to National Geoscience Award (NGA) in the year 2009. The objective of the scheme is to honour individuals and teams of scientists for their extraordinary achievements and outstanding contributions in the field of fundamental/ applied geosciences, mining and allied areas to provide incentive for striving toward excellence. Any citizen of India who is a professionally qualified geo-scientist/ engineer/ technologist/ academician with significant contribution in any field of earth sciences is eligible. The Award carry an award money Rs.2,00,000/-.
