Dr Abhishek Saha selected to receive the National Geoscience Award (Young Scientist Category)
Dr Abhishek Saha, Scientists in the Geological Oceanography Division of CSIR-NIO has been selected to receive the National Geoscience Award (Young Scientist Category) for the year 2016 by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The ministry had initiated the 'National Mineral Awards' Scheme in the year 1966. The scope of the awards scheme has been expanded and changed to National Geoscience Award (NGA) in the year 2009. The objective of the “Young Scientist Award” is to honour and motivate geoscientists below the age of 35 years for his/her outstanding contributions in the field of geosciences, mining and allied areas to provide incentive for striving toward excellence.
Dr Saha will receive the award in the category of “Young Scientist Award” for his significant contributions in the Geosciences.
Dr. Abhishek Saha has made significant contribution in the field of petrology and geochemistry research in India. His petrological and geochemical works on felsic and mafic rocks has thrown light on the intra-oceanic subduction processes, tectonics of greenstone belts and ophiolites. Dr. Saha’s significant work on gold genesis and PGE fractionation provides a better understanding of mineralization and petrogenetic processes. His research on various rock suites from North eastern India immensely strengthen the concept of the role of Kerguelen plume activity beneath the Indian Plate in Cretaceous and Precambrian subduction related activities during proto-continent generation. Moreover, he first time reported the occurrence of Vanadium bearing titaniferous magnetite ore deposit from the North eastern India. Dr. Saha was the sole onboard scientist from India in IODP Expedition 345 where he worked as an inorganic geochemist and studied the geochemistry of lower crustal gabbroic sequences of East Pacific Rise. The first output of this expedition was published in Nature. Dr. Saha has been selected for CSIR Research Associateship (in 2013) and INSA-DST Inspire Faculty Fellowship (in 2014). He has received prestigious Asiatic Society Gold Medal in the year 2012 and Indian Society of Applied Geochemists (ISAG) medal for his outstanding contribution in the field of Geochemistry applied to Mineral Exploration in 2015. Dr. Saha has been elected as Associate Fellow of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Science in 2016. He is one of the members of the CSIR XII Plan Network Project on “Geological processes in the Indian Ocean – Understanding the input fluxes, sinks and Paleoceanography (GEOSINKS)” and Ministry of Earth Science Project on “Survey and Exploration under Polymetallic Nodules”.
Congratulations to Dr Abhishek Saha.
