Nothing miraculous about Mahim water turning sweet
On 19 August 2006 the water in the near-shore zone of the Mahim Bay in the vicinity of Shivaji Park was reported to have turned fresh water. The strange news resulted in public frenzy with thousands of people visiting the beach, many of whom not only bathed in the water but also drank it with the faith that a miracle had occurred. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) conducted studies in the Mahim Bay on 19 and 21 August 2006 to identify the source of this low salinity water and offer plausible reason for this phenomenon. This report (click title below) has been submitted to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
