Indo-China Collaboration in Earth Sciences
In an effort to initiate Indo-China collaborations in Earth System Studies the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of India and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) jointly sponsored a Workshop on "Global Change: Ocean-Atmosphere-Land interactions driven by monsoon", 4-6 December 2006. This Workshop was organized by the National Institute of Oceanography at the International Centre, Goa. Prof. Congbin Fu, Academician and Director of START Regional Office in Beijing, led a 16 member distinguished Chinese delegation that included Prof. Wenjie Dong, Director-General of National Climate Centre, Beijing; Prof. Bangqin Huang, Director, Environmental Science Research Centre of Xiamen University; Prof. Fan Wang, Chairman, CAS Key Laboratory, Institute of Oceanology at Qingdao; Prof. Xiaodong Yan, Director, START TEA Regional Research Centre, Beijing; Weidong Yu, Deputy Director of Marine Science and Numerical Modeling (MASNUM), First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) in Qingdao; Prof. Zhang Lei, Deputy Dean, College of Atmospheric Sciences of Lanzhou University, Gansu; and Prof. Yucheng Chai, Executive Director of Department of Earth Sciences, NSFC in Beijing. A 18 member team of Indian Scientists was led by Dr. S. R. Shetye, Director of the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, that included participants also from other CSIR Institutions; National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi and Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation, Bangalore. This Workshop was organized following a Working Agreement for the period 2006-08 signed between CSIR and NSFC on 21 March this year in Beijing to promote collaborative research. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Head, ISTAD of CSIR, New Delhi, gave an account of genesis and expectations from the Workshop. Following the inaugural addresses by Prof. Fu and Dr. Shetye, 26 scientific presentations were made on wide ranging topics such as Ocean-Atmosphere interactions, biogeochemistry, biological dynamics, Land-Ocean interactions, atmosphere, paleoceanography and Modelling. Extensive discussions led both the sides to propose several new focused scientific investigations in the area of Earth Sciences and Oceanography including natural disasters. Intentions for 10 Joint proposals have been made. A need to take up CSIR-NSFC initiative to conduct "experiments on Global Change and monsoon driven processes" involving other countries of the Asia-Pacific region is also stressed. The organization of the Workshop was coordinated by Dr. Purnima Rupal of CSIR, New Delhi, and Dr. M. Dileep Kumar of NIO.
