Prof. Victor Smetacek: NIO's First Adjunct Scientist
NIO, with pleasure, wishes to announce that Prof. Victor Smetacek has accepted to become the first Adjunct Scientist of NIO. Prof Smetacek is a global leader in ocean ecology and biogeochemistry. Born in India, he has spent most of his professional career in Germany, but continues to be an Indian citizen. He is on the faculty of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany (see
). He will be arriving on our campus on 18 December 2006 and stay with us for about two months. While accepting our request, Prof Smetacek replied "Institute-wide, interdisciplinary cooperation is a prerequisite for establishing Earth Systems Science in order to achieve cutting-edge advances in global change research. A thorough understanding of the requirements of the various disciplines by all ocean scientists will greatly facilitate the formation of interdisciplinary teams capable of positioning themselves at the forefront of international research". He would contribute to this effort by offering a series of lectures on the themes:
The Big Picture of the Global Carbon Cycle as part of emerging Earth System Science
Biogeochemistry of the oceans: The evolution and ecological role of key species from bacteria to whales
Nutrient cycles and food chains in the oceans and continental margins.
The emerging role of iron
Ongoing anthropogenic impact and predictions for the future ocean
Overfishing, aquaculture, coastal eutrophication, pollution, acidification and other syndromes
Consequences of global warming and feasibility of mitigation strategies We welcome Prof Smetacek to NIO and look forward to benefit from these lectures and interactions.
