Dr SWA Naqvi on UNEP panel of experts
Dr SWA Naqvi has been selected as one of the experts to conduct an 'assessment of assessments' of the state of the marine environment by the Ad Hoc Steering Group set up by the UN General Assembly. In a communication received to him from Joana D. AKROFI, Associate Programme Officer, Division of Early Warning Assessment (DEWA), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) it is indicated that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed the resolution 60/30 (in November 2005), on the Regular Process for global reporting and assessment of the state of the marine environment including socio-economic aspects. In this resolution, the Assembly decided to launch the start-up phase, the 'assessment of assessments', established the Ad Hoc Steering Group to oversee the process and invited the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to jointly lead the process. The secretariat among others is to produce a report on the results of the 'assessment of assessments' to be conducted by a 'Group of Experts' (20) for the General Assembly within a period of two years. UNEP and IOC of UNESCO are planning to hold the first meeting of the Expert Group around the middle of March 2007.
