Dr V.V.R. Varadachari, Former Director of NIO passes away.
Dr V.V.R. Varadachari, former Director of NIO passed away on 4 August 2007 late evening at Bangalore. He was 82 and was ailing for some time. Born on 1 July 1925 at Gutala, a place near Rajamahendri in Andhra Pradesh in India, Dr Varadachari completed his B.Sc. (Honors) in Physics. He was a student of Prof Bhagawantam (Scientific Advisor to the then Prime Minister of India). He was the first student to be admitted to Meteorology and Oceanography Department at Andhra University for his M.Sc. studies in 1949. He then studied at Florida State University in USA to complete M.S. in Fluid Mechanics (1953-55). He completed his D.Sc. In 1959 at Andhra University while serving on the faculty of Andhra University before moving to CSIR. He joined the Directorate of the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) in 1963 at Indian Ocean Physical Oceanographic Centre (IOPOC) at Kochi. He was Head of the Physical Oceanography Division of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) since its inception in 1966. In 1974, he became Deputy Director of the Institute and retired as the Director of NIO in 1985. As a scientist, he had about 45 research publications to his credit in various aspects of physical oceanography including shallow water as well as open ocean physical processes. The field of oceanography in India experienced a rapid growth during his short tenure as Director (1982-1985). The completion of 100 cruises of the first research vessel of NIO (RV Gaveshani), commissioning of new research vessel - ORV Sagar Kanya, early Indian Antarctic Expeditions, initiation of a prestigious project on the survey of polymetallic nodules in the Indian Ocean, enhancement of staff strength of NIO, were some of the milestones of his tenure as Director. Dr Varadachari was a Fellow of all the three prestigious science academies of India - Indian Academy of Sciences (elected in 1974), Indian National Science Academy (1981) and National Accademy of Sciences, Allahabad (1984). He leaves behind four daughters and two sons. Director and Staff of NIO deeply mourn the sad demise of Dr Varadachari and express heartfelt sympathies to his bereaved family.
