Dr Chatterji with Malaysian horseshoe crab
Dr Anil Chatterji, a senior scientist of NIO is on deputation on a Research Fellowship to Malaysia until end of 2008. His main interests are to focus on the habitat restoration, conservation of the species of horse shoe crabs that are found on Malaysian coastline. He also aims at the setting up of a Centre for horseshoe crab that would take care of the activities he would initiate this year. The Malaysian coast has three species of the horseshoe crab and Dr Chatterji writes "It is for the first time I noticed a wonderful distribution. I collected two pairs of biggest hosreshoe crab ever I had seen. The weight of one of the females is 7.5 kg and this is going to be a new record", while sending the photo of the crab. The Malaysian government has also approved a grant of 3 million Ringgits (Malaysian currency, 1 Ringgit= approx 12 Indian Rupees).
