Visit of Shri Prithviraj Chavan, Hon'ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences to NIO
Shri Prithviraj Chavan, Hon'ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences visited National Institute of
Oceanography (NIO), a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research on Monday, 15 February 2010. Shri Chavan was apprised of the work that is being carried out at this institute which includes services to Indian industry and research of strategic importance to the country. He also visited couple of laboratories to understand the activities and projects of national importance that have been taken up by NIO.
While addressing the staff of NIO, he noted that the Government of India has recently provided considerable support towards infrastructure development in the country’s research and educational institutions. He also noted that generous support is now being made available for higher education in science by providing scholarships at different levels. Also new institutes of excellence are being started. He hoped that this investment will attract young generation towards pure science studies which act as a catalyst to accelerate scientific and industrial research in the country. As a part of funding in the development of infrastructure, he highlighted an investment in the form of research vessels for NIO. He also appreciated the research work that is being carried out at NIO and indicated that NIO’s role fits well in many of the missions of the country.
Hon’ble Minister then inaugurated an extension of the main building of the institute that adds 3100 sq. m. of floor area to the institute having special facilities to support multidisciplinary research, including sedimentary analyses, isotope studies and microbial ecology studies. The new facility will also have a 66 sq. m. cold room at minus 20º C to store samples and two 135 sq. m. of cold storage at minus 4º C to preserve sediment cores besides ‘clean rooms’ of 70 sq. m. with controlled environment.
While talking to the press he stressed on the need for the research in the EEZ of India and Antarctica and expressed his satisfaction on the work that is being carried out by NIO and by the National Centre for Antarctic and Oceanic Research of the Ministry of Earth Sciences located at Vasco-da-Gama.
