Prof. Rainer Lohmann arrived as NIO Visiting Fellow
NIO, with pleasure, wishes to announce that Prof. Rainer Lohmann has accepted to be with us as Visiting Fellow from 1 September to 31 December 2010 under NIO Visiting Fellowship Scheme. Under this scheme, we invite scholars in the field to interact and collaborate with researchers at NIO and also deliver lectures that benefit not only the staff at NIO but also any one interested in the same.
Prof. Rainer Lohmann works at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. His work encompasses organic geochemistry and the chemistry of organic pollutants in the Oceans. In terms of organic geochemistry, he is interested in understanding the flux of black carbon from atmosphere to the sediments. Black carbon is not only a major factor in global change and human health, but is of interest to geochemists due to its inertness in the carbon cycle. So far, most of his field work is focused on the Atlantic Ocean. At NIO, he would collaborate to better understand the concentration, fluxes and sources of black carbon accumulating in sediments of the Indian Ocean/ continental shelf.
Prof. Lohmann's other interest is in determining the concentrations and fluxes of a range of organic pollutants (e.g., pesticides, PAHs, industrial products), and their fate in the Oceans. He has focused on developing passive sampling approaches to obtain direct measurements of chemical activities of these compounds, and derive chemical gradients in the water column and across water-air and water-sediment interfaces.
With his visit, we look forward a collaboration between the two laboratories: NIO and Univ. Rhode Island that would lead to case studies involving these samplers at NIO Goa. Click on
