NRDC Award to Dr. Anil Valsangkar
Dr. Anil Valsangkar, a senior Scientist of NIO has received NRDC Award (instituted by National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) - an enterprise of DSIR, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India) for the Year 2009, for "A Portable device for in-situ
sub-sampling of Aqueous Sediments". The Prize Award Committee at its final meeting has awarded Rs. 5.00 Lakhs under the category Innovation Award of the Year 2009. A patent for this device has also been filed (Application no: 270NF2006) in India on 03 May 2007.
This device consists of a portable and reusable special core liner (SPCL) that accomplishes real-time sub-sampling of aqueous sediments. Besides being revolutionary, inexpensive and user-friendly, the SPCL is capable of collecting undisturbed sediment sub-sections. The SPCL also facilitates rapid sub-sampling of sediments onboard with remote possibility of core shortening, sample outflow, contamination or mixing. The method of sub-sampling by SPCL also saves time, money and manpower, without inducing changes in the physical and biogeochemical properties of the sediments.
Dr. Valsangkar retired on superannuation in July 2010 after 30 years of service at NIO. His area of specialization was Marine Minerals, Sedimentology, Geochemistry & Isotope Chemistry. He was associated with the prestigious project of Exploration of polymetallic nodules.
More information about the device is available in published literature titled A special core liner for sub-sampling of aqueous sediments (
Curr. Sci.: 96(10); 2009; 1382-1386
) and A device for finer-scale sub-sectioning of aqueous sediments (
