NIO RC Mumbai building Phase II construction initiated
The Regional centre of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) at Mumbai, today, has about 25 permanent and almost 50 temporory staff engaged mostly in providing service to the industry in the form of sponsored and consultancy projects. This centre existed during the establishment of the institute in the year 1966 as 'Field Unit'. Its status was elevated to the Regional Centre in the year 1972-73.
Currently the centre is located on its own campus at Andheri (West) and plans to increase the laboratory facilities not only for the industry that it is serving but also for the basic and applied research in oceanography. On 19 April 2011, the foundation stone for this Phase II of the building was laid by Dr. BN Desai (former Director of NIO, who had also served as Scientist-in-charge of this regional centre for very long period and brought this centre to its fame as is noticed today), in presence of Drs. MD Zingde (also a former Scientist-in-charge who nursed the growth of this centre), NR Iyer, Director, Engineering coordination CSIR and SERC, and SAH Abidi (who had initial phase of his career at this centre along with Dr. Desai), SR Shetye (Director, NIO), SN Gajbhiye (Scientist-in-charge), KH vora (Head, Estate Management), and many other past and present staff of the Regional centre and guests. In addition to above, the ground breaking ceremony was performed by Dr. Shetye.
Phase II of laboratory building of this centre will house modern laboratories, seating places for scientists, a big seminar hall, facilities for storing of samples, guest house, etc. As per architectural programme over 3000 sq.m. of the built up area will be added to the existing 1000 sq.m. space on ground + 4 floors. A small space of about 330 sq.m. will be shared with the Regional centre of the Central Food Technology Research Institute (CFTRI) - a sister laboratory.
