   Dr. Shetye is NIO's New Director  
Dr. Satish Ramnath Shetye has been appointed Director of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) on 21 March 2004. He took over the charge from Dr. M.D. Zingde, the Scientist-in-Charge of NIO’s Regional Centre, Mumbai, who has been serving as Acting Director since November 2003. Dr. Shetye becomes the seventh Director of this 38 year old premier ocean research institute and a constituent laboratory of Council of scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Born in Goa on 25 October, 1950, Dr. Shetye is a Physics postgraduate from IIT Bombay. He received his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the University of Washington, Seattle, U.S.A. Since joining NIO in 1982, he has been studying different aspects of Physical Oceanography of the waters around India. These have included dynamics of coastal currents, interaction between the monsoons and the North Indian Ocean and dynamics of Indian estuaries. His work has attracted a number of honours. In 1992 he was elected to the Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. The same year he received the coveted Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Environmental Sciences. In 1997 he was elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi. He received the New Millennium Science Medal at the Indian Science Congress, Pune, in 2000. He is also Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad. Since 2001 he has been serving as the Editor of the Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences - Earth and Planetary Sciences. He also serves on a number of high level national and international bodies on ocean research.
