School of Oceanography inaugurated
National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) started the School of Oceanography under the agis of Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) - the ambitious initiative by the Council of Scientific and Industrial research (CSIR) - to fulfill the
needs of research students in oceanography in India. The school was inaugurated on 8th August 2011 by Dr. S.R. Shetye, Director, NIO. In his inaugural address Dr. Shetye opined that it is the responsibility of NIO - being a premier oceanographic institution - to inculcate teaching program with its research mandate for sustaining world-class oceanographic studies. India is blessed with over 2 million square km of EEZ and over 7000 km of coastline, hence needs young oceanographers to address closely-knit hydrosphere-atmosphere-geosphere-biosphere interactions in effectively. The school of oceanography is a step forward in that direction.
The school has launched a full-fledged multidisciplinary oceanographic teaching. A first batch of fifteen NET-JRFs have been admitted to the NIO’s AcSIR-Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. course is planned for two semesters and is designed to offer exposure to all branches of oceanography along with mathematics and modeling in easily digestible form to a student with a Masters degree in Science. The ultimate goal of the school is to build a program to teach Earth System Science in future, which is most essential requirement of the modern world. The AcSIR-Coordinator, Dr. V.K. Banakar, Scientist G of the institute, briefed on the year-long efforts put by the faculty and infrastructure groups to translate the dream for such a school at NIO in to a reality.
