Farming with sustainable profits - Sheshagiri Rao speaks on the occasion of CSIR Foundation Day
On the occasion of CSIR foundation Day (26 September) - a foundation day of parent organization - National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) organizes a lecture from the eminent personalities from different walks of life - not necessarily oceanography. This is to benefit all the community where the laboratory is situated – i.e. Goa. Mr. P.R. Sheshagiri Rao - a successful farmer, scientist and a manager - shared his experience in his lecture this year (2011) titled "Farming the Rain for Sustainable Profits: An Experience of working with Complex Systems".
Mr. Rao highlighted the problems that exist in Indian agriculture such as uncertain climate, economic abilities of farmers and also poor S&T adoption. However, he indicated that the farmers should make use of best opportunities that exist such as tropical area, sunshine, biodiversity, manageable small farms, etc. He indicated that he was successful in the place where the annual rainfall is just 75 cms as against 250cms in Goa. He insisted on the diversification and alternative farming practices. He spoke on the design principles, processes involved, economics and also focused on understanding the weaknesses of these alternative farming practices. He shared his experience in dealing with the ill-educated farmers who have achieved success in the form of profitable agriculture by making use of mobile phone technology for sending data for analysis to a laboratory and receiving the guidelines on management of their farms.
Dr Rao specifically recommended 3 storied agriculture practices like tall trees (e.g. timber), fodder bushes and the crop. Though the initial investment is higher in his alternative farming practices, he indicated that this maximizes the returns in a period of 5-7 years.
The agriculturists and scientists in agriculture of Goa, besides the staff of NIO, attended the lecture and participated in the discussions. Dr. Shetye, Director, NIO welcomed the guest and Dr. Judith Gonsalves extended vote of thanks.
Dr. Rao's presentation is enclosed.
