Ocean challenges of the future
By Prof. Victor Smetacek
Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, 27570 Bremerhaven, Germany and Adjunct Scientist at CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa
The ocean today is in a sorry state. It’s once teeming stocks of large animals from whales to fish and turtles have been severely decimated, its surface waters are acidifying, anoxic zones are spreading, not to mention the effects of pollution and oil spills. However, the greatest threat facing humankind is the rapidity with which sea level is rising as a result of ongoing global warming. Clearly, oceanographers are faced with the challenge of mitigating these threats but also to develop innovative ways of coping with them. The talk will outline some of the avenues that could be approached in the future to not only protect the oceans but also to explore techniques to harness the ocean’s potential to improve the deteriorating state of the planet.
Prof Smetacek is a global leader in ocean ecology and biogeochemistry. Born in India, he has spent most of his professional career in Germany, but continues to be an Indian citizen. He is on the faculty of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany (see
). He is also the first Adjunct Scientist of NIO and have given several lectures to the researchers at NIO since 2006 and also partnered in the collaborative projects with German laboratories.
