Faculty Training and Motivation program for high school teachers
The annual event - Faculty Training and Motivation program for high school teachers from Goa during this year was organized
between 19th to 22nd June 2012. This programme was funded by Human Resource Department Group, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Delhi. The purpose of the program is to re-energize teachers, expose them to different fields of oceanography, give them in-depth, hands-on research experience. Their increased knowledge about the world of oceans and research experience is supposed to make their teaching more interesting and fruitful back home. The participants were encouraged to learn the content and process of scientific inquiry by engaging in research, group discussions and communicate their findings with others. The training provided an opportunity to the teachers to interact with some of the eminent researchers.
The programme was attended by 15 science teachers from different schools of Goa this year. The training was based on a central theme: "Ocean Science" with lectures like Sagar Manthan, A journey to the icy continent, New trends in biotechnology, etc.; demonstration on specialized equipment such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, X-Ray diffractometer; visits to aquaculture laboratory to know more about sea horse culture, to marine archeology museum that houses artifacts, and to NIO's coastal research vessel Sagar Sukti. Participants debated on environmental issues as a part of group discussion.
Dr Satish Shetye, Director, NIO congratulated the participants and handed over the certificates during the concluding session. Ms Maria Brenda L. Mascarenhas Pereira, Scientist and coordinator of the programme proposed the vote of thanks.
