Prepare yourself for the irreversible future of global warming - Dr. Pachauri
It is most likely that we will not be able to stop changing climate and therefore we must be ready for the adaptation and
mitigation. Dr. RK Pachauri, Director General, The Energy Research Institute (TERI) and Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was speaking on the occasion of 47th NIO Foundation Day lecture on "The challenge of climate change and implications for coastal cities" in the NIO Auditorium, The Cardium, on 1 January 2013. "Mitigation efforts over the next two to three decades will have a large impact on opportunities to achieve lower stabilisation levels", he said. The importance of preparedness was underlined by him during his talk. "Getting ready with early warning systems, better governance locally, creation of large infrastructure to do all this are essential aspects that need to be attended to in a short time of about two to three decades. Making development more sustainable can enhance mitigative and adaptive capacities, reduce emissions, and reduce vulnerability, but there may be barriers to implementation", he added.
Dr. Pachauri also spoke on the possibility of harvesting energy from oceans which is still an area not been seriously looked into. In his early part of lecture he highlighted on the impact of climate change such as rise in temperature, rise in sea level, and downward trend of the snow cover in the polar regions, which according to him is the result of human actions.
Dr. Naqvi, Acting Director of CSIR-NIO welcomed Dr. Pachauri and Dr. Ramaiah, Chief Scientist of the institute thanked for the informative lecture that was attended by large audience including the citizens of Goa besides CSIR-NIO staff.
