ASEAN-India Marine Biotechnology Workshop concluded
A 4 day ASEAN-India Marine Biotechnology Workshop organised at the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa concluded on 22 March 2013. This cooperative effort was mainly supported by ASEAN-India S&T Development Fund, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India and the Sub-Committee on Marine Science and Technology (SCMSAT) of ASEAN countries. SCMSAT focal point representatives of ASEAN member countries and India deliberated upon the theme areas such as: mariculture biotechnology, marine natural products biomining, pollution bioremediation, marine enzymes of industrial importance, threats related to shipping activities, algal biotechnology and prospecting of marine algal flora for biofuels in eight science sessions, two plenary sessions.
Twenty-two delegates from nine of the ten ASEAN Member countries attended this Workshop. Twelve Indian experts from research laboratories like CIBA (ICAR), CCMB, CSMCRI, NIIST, NIO (all CSIR), and from private sector such as Piramal Life Sciences (Biomolecules and Drugs), Sea6Energy (Biofuel Industry) and Myko Tech (Marine Bioproducts) delivered invited talk. Besides this, members placed their ideas in 54 presentations and 18 posters. ASEAN member country representatives presented the status of marine biotechnology research.
The ASEAN delegates recommended to formulate a programme covering mariculture biotechnology, biomining for marine natural products and pollution bioremediation. It was agreed that a 3-5 year programme be conceived, developed and implemented soon wherein, all ASEAN member countries and India will work together addressing both R&D as well as technology development related aspects. Dr Ramaiah, Chief Scientist from CSIR-NIO is entrusted with the job of collating, interacting and developing a full-pledged programme. A draft of the concept note on this programme will be prepared, presented and submitted for consideration by the SCMSAT at the forthcoming ASEAN member countries meeting to be held in Philippines during 20-21 May 2013. Such a programme, is likely to help looking holistically at many inter-related aspects of marine biotechnology.
