Mr. Denis Chouinard, Political & Economic Counsellor, Canadian High Commission visits NIO
In search of recharging the relations between India and Canada in the field of Marine Sciences, Mr. Denis Chouinard and Ms. Madhusri Das visited NIO on 8 July 2004. He indicated that the Canada always respects in the sustainable developments associated with the oceans and there are large number of academic and research institutes in Canada doing active research in this field of knowledge. He also indicated that the Canada is a key negotiator for the Law of the Sea. Dr. D. Chandramohan, Acting Director of NIO highlighted the NIO's activities and infrastructure basically in the areas of Integrated Coastal Management, Marine Biodiversity, Engineering and Technology, Ocean Processes, Offshore resources, etc. He also highlighted on the recent achievements, technologies developed and displayed map of collaborations between various countries that NIO have. During the discussion, it was indicated that though there was not much active collaboration between Canadian institutions and India, the SIDA project during 1977 was identified to be the first collaborative effort. It was also highlighted that under one of the UNDP project the Indian and Canadian scientists did a collaborative work and the end result has been published in "Nature" which attracted attention of many scientists all over the world. Some visits of the NIO's Scientists to Canada were also indicated. The institutes that have a potential for collaboration with NIO in Canada are: Bedford Institute of Oceanography and Dalhousie University. It was pointed out that the Canada is very strong in the areas such as Biosensing, Ocean colour data analysis, marine biotechnology and the potential for collaboration does exist. Mr. Chouinard expressed satisfaction of his visit to NIO and indicated that he would look for opportunities of mutual co-operation in future.
