Swachh Bharat Mission – Caranzalem Beach cleaning by NIO
As a part of the 'Swachh Bharat Mission” of Government of India, CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Dona Paula, has launched a cleanliness drive on its campus as well as on the beach along the Caranzalem Bay frequented by locals and tourists. The campaign was initiated by Director, Dr. SWA Naqvi who administered an oath to the employees and students of NIO and urged them to maintain cleanliness not only in their surroundings but in public places as well.
About 200 scientists, students and residents of the area took part in the campaign to raise awareness on beach cleanliness with help of banners displayed at public places and by talking to the local people about the need to conserve the beach ecosystem and to make it garbage free in order to sustain the economic activities such as tourism and fishing. Garbage from the beach area was collected in more than 100 bags which were separately marked for glass and plastic
CSIR-NIO has been following a scientific approach for garbage collection by segregating paper, plastic, glass and metal, non-degradable on its campus which is handed over to the Municipal Corporation for further processing. In addition to these, the e-waste is collected by the IT department and recycled appropriately. Also, kitchen waste from the apartments of NIO colony is collected and used in vermiculture which is used for preparing manure to be used by the horticulture section.
Photographs of various activities conducted are attached.
