The 48th Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Memorial Tournament, commence at CSIR-NIO
“Winning is not the most important part of a game, participation is” were the words stated by Mrs. Alina Saldanha, Hon’ble Minister, Museums, Science & Technology and Rural Development, will inaugurating the 48th Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Memorial Tournament (SSBMT), Indoor – Zonal, held during 19- 21 August 2016. This year the Indoor Zonal meet is held at CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula Goa. The main objectives of organizing such a sports event is to bring people of different labs together and help to establish new contacts, make new friends and to convey oneness in CSIR. This sports meet has brought 10 different CSIR laboratories to Goa for the Indoor Tournament.
The Opening ceremony was held on 18th August at CSIR-NIO. Mrs Saldanha, reviewed the March Past in presence of Dr.
SWA Naqvi, Director, CSIR-NIO, Dr. NG Bhagavan, Sports Promotion Board Member and Shri Sundaresh, Organising Secretary, SSBMT. Later the participants pledged their willingness for participation in the games. The Oath was read by Shri Yusuf Muzawar, Joint Secretary NIO Staff club and Miss Talasha Prabhu, International ace swimmer.
As Mrs Saldanha, addressed the gathering, she mentioned a few pioneering achievements of NIO in the scientific field. She also revealed that as she
witnessed the march past, it took her back memory lane as she was a real sportswoman too. She emphasised the real need of sports in our life’s and the sportsmanship one should abide to compete for fair and loyal competitions.
“SSBMT is a platform created by CSIR Sports Promotion Board to bring all CSIR laboratories together to build a committed CSIR family and create team spirit, leadership and zeal to excel against all odds” were the views of Dr. NG Bhagavan.
Earlier during the programme Dr. Naqvi welcomed the gathering and Shri Sundaresh, proposed the vote of thanks.
This 3 day event will have 220 sportspersons playing Carom, Bridge, Chess , Badminton and Table Tennis in CRIS-NIO Campus and at the Indoor stadium, Sports Authority of Goa, Campal. The participating teams are as follows; CSIR- Central Electro Chemical Research Institute, Karaikudi (CECRI); CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata (CGCRI); CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow (CIMAP); CSIR- CSIR Complex, New Delhi; CSIR- Head Quarters, New Delhi; CSIR- Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi (IGIB); CSIP- Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, (IIP); CSIR- Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, (IITR); CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (NCL); CSIR- National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur( NEERI).
