CSIR Technology Award for Dr B. Chakraborty
receives CSIR Technology Award in Engineering Technology for the year 2004 for his contributions (along with Dr Kodagali who was also a staff of NIO and presently working in Dept. Ocean Development, Govt. of India) in the Development of a system for quantitative estimation of the seafloor roughness parameter using multi-beam echo sounding system at high acoustic frequency range. The work includes development of software for estimating the seafloor roughness. The work has also been patented in USA, and published in referred journals. The technology so developed has been successfully used in the Indian Ocean at Central Indian Ocean Basin, Bay of Bengal and also at eastern sector of Antarctica and North Atlantic Ocean. The award winning work is especially useful in finding out the geomorphology of the sea floor which otherwise was being carried out by bathymetric data analysis only for large-scale seafloor aspects. The method developed provides quantitative, fine-scale aspects of the topography (micro-topography). The technique provides real time information about the seafloor surveyed. The seafloor roughness is measured during Exclusive Economic Zone surveys, and many marine geological researches including for sampling decisions, seabed mining, etc. The prize carries a cash of Rs. 2.00 lakhs, a citation and a plaque. Congratulations to Dr Chakraborty.
