Acoustical Foundation of India presents Silver Medal to Dr. Bishwajit Chakraborty
Acoustical Foundation of India presents Silver medal to its members who have made outstanding contribution in a field of Acoustics. Bishwajit
is the First recipient of Silver Medal in Underwater Acoustics for his contribution in Transducer array for multi-frequency bathymetric application, computational and artificial neural network based models for high-frequency seafloor acoustic data interpretation. The citation received on 25 November 2004 reads: ".... He has pioneered measurement of seafloor micro-roughness using multi-beam echo-sounding system at high frequency acoustic signal frequency range, and also developed echo-data processing technique to employ inversion technique for novel characterization of the seafloor. Numerical analysis applied by Dr. Chakraborty based on the 'composite roughness theory' for deep seafloor micro-roughness has uncovered many interrelated issues like: large scale and small scale (micro-topographic) parameters. The considerable effort to acquire and work on multi-beam backscatter data from various deep waters (eastern sectors of the Southern Ocean, Central Indian Ocean, Central Arabian Sea, Krishna-Godavari basin of Bay of Bengal, and Porcupine Seabight of northern Atlantic Ocean) reflects Bishwajit energy and focused approach towards the scientific goals. Many international publications related to these activities including two US patents on multi-beam echo-sounding data processing and interpretation software are notable indicator of his contribution. Dr. Chakrabortys on-going contribution in the development of pattern recognition based soft computational techniques such as artificial Neural Network is a noteworthy addition to marine geology on sampling decisions. This untraditional approach to understand the complexity of the seafloor geomorphology simultaneously with model (numerical) and model free (soft computational) techniques, unique in the field of high-frequency acoustics, have been pioneered by Dr. Chakraborty....."
