InterRidge Workshop: Award for Best Student...
The InterRidge workshop on Tectonic and Oceanic Processes along the Indian Ocean Ridge System (TOP-AIRS) was held at NIO, Goa during 19-21 January 2005 in association with InterRidge, Kiel, Germany. The workshop was supported and funded by CSIR-DOD & InterRidge, and aimed to gain comprehensive knowledge on the tectonic and oceanic processes occurring on the spreading axes of the Indian Ocean ridge system through inter-disciplinary efforts.
The event evoked good response from the international scientific community. One of the objectives of the workshop was to evolve new strategies to explore the Mid-Oceanic Ridges (MOR’s) and understand the complex linkages between geological, geophysical, physical, chemical & biological processes occurring along these ridges. MOR’s stretching more than 70,000 kms along the bottom of the world’s oceans, are marked by seismic activity and are primary sites of generation of new oceanic crust.
To encourage student ridge researchers internationally, InterRidge (International cooperation in ridge-crest studies) instituted Best Student Poster Awards. Following students (all from NIO) have won the above award, which carry a citation and US $700 (US$700/3 per poster):
1. Anoop, K.V. and Bhaskar, B.V. et al.
For poster entitled 'Processing and presentation of multi-beam echosounder data on Carlsberg and Central Indian ridges, Indian ocean'.
2. Dwijesh Ray et al.
For poster entitled 'An overview of basalts and gabbros along the Northern Central Indian Ridge'.
3. Sheryl, O. and Krishnan, K.P. et al.
For poster entitled 'Manganese oxidation by bacterial isolates from ridge ecosystem'.
