NIO in Press
NIO celebrated it's foundation day on 1st January...
NIO celebrated it's foundation day on 1st January. This day was more important this year because of completion of 40 years of active contribution in oceanic research. Besides cultural programmes and get together, this year's Foundation day will be remembered because Prof Gerardus 't Hooft, a Nobel Laureate in Physics (1999), agreed to our request to join us during the occasion. He participated in the discussions with the young minds - coming from educational institutions besides the research fellows and project staff at NIO and answered hundreds of questions in forenoon session. He was the guest of honour this year and delivered the Foundation Day Lecture. The scientists, students and public listened to him with great enthusiasm on tiniest sub-atomic particles (The Smallest Building Blocks of Matter).
He took the audience to the 1960s and described the developments since then and the amount of new information that is available concerning the tiniest sub-atomic particles in the atomic nuclei today. He also described the agents that transmit forces across these nuclei. He further explained that the weak, the electro-magnetic, and the strong forces turn out all to be based on the same principles. He, however, ended with a note on the gravitational force known to be linked to the fabric of space and time that still presents us with mysteries. This being the 40th foundation year, many more events are organized throughout the year and information on all this will be known from this website. Visit us more frequently.
