NIO Dispensary opens doors to TB patients
NIO Dispensary has been recognized as one of the 'DOT Centres' for eradication of Tuberculosis (TB). The responsibility of the centre is to help the TB patients in and around Dona Paula in their medicinal requirements and make them to take the medicine on a regular basis to completely cure this disease. Sister Ms Kanchan Mochemadkar received the Certificate of recognition at the hands of Shri Dayanand Narvekar, Health Minister, Govt of Goa on 24 March 2006 on behalf of NIO Dispensary. TB kills more adults than any other infectious diseases. More than 1000 people a day (1 every minute!) die due to TB in our country. The treatment to TB patients is of longer duration - 6 months. The patents take medicines for initial couple of months or so and then they neglect when they feel better. However, this is too short period to have a complete control on the disease. Therefore, the idea of Directly Observed Treatment - DOT- Centres has been initiated by Govt of India under National Tuberculosis Control Programme wherein the medicines will be administered at the centre itself. Dr Kalpana Chodankar would act as the supervising doctor and Sister Kanchan Mochemadkar would execute the treatment for which they have received special treatment. The TB patients in and around Dona Paula would visit dispensary on the designated days for treatment. This would ensure a control on the disease and avoiding its spread in the area we live and work.
