NIO Scientists invited as consultants by CoML
Dr. Saramma U. Panampunnayil, Scientist-F, RC of NIO, Kochi and Dr.C.B.Lalithambika Devi, Consultant (Retired Scientist-F of NIO), RC of NIO, Kochi have been invited by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute to participate in a NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) sponsored cruise in the NOAA research vessel Ronald H.Brown from 10-30 April 2006. The objective of the cruise is to assess the zooplankton biodiversity of tropical/ subtropical Atlantic Ocean waters, under the Census of Marine Zooplankton (CMarZ), an ocean realm field project of the Census of Marine Life (CoML). Dr.Panampunnayil, an expert in Mysidacea and Dr.C.B.L. Devi, an expert in fish larvae are invited as zooplankton taxonomic experts to identify the species and also to train students through on At-Sea Zooplankton Taxonomy Workshop. Dr.Vijayalakshmi R. Nair another consultant (Retired Scientist-F of NIO) at RC of NIO, Kochi has been nominated as a member of the Steering Group of CMarZ from 2005 to 2010. CMarZ works towards a taxonomically comprehensive assessment of biodiversity of zooplankton throughout the world oceans. Dr. Nair will represent India for contributing required input for Indian Ocean region. Education, professional training and capacity building are major objectives of CMarZ considering the dwindling number of taxonomic experts in zooplankton. The expected important outcome are more complete knowledge of biodiversity, new understanding of the functional role of biodiversity in ocean ecosystems and better characterization of global scale patterns of zooplankton biodiversity in the world oceans.
