NIO's scientists on Gas Hydrates drilling expedition
Way back in 1999-2001, NIO in association with GAIL had explored the possibility of gas hydrates offshore Goa. There were other organizations doing similar work in other Indian offshore regions. Subsequent multidisciplinary investigations, carried out offshore Goa and Krishna-Godavari (KG) offshore basins, indicated the presence of methane in the shallow sedimentary column and the probable presence of gas hydrates in the sub-surface. Encouraged from the results of the various studies the National Gas Hydrate Programme (NGHP) formed under aegis of Ministry of Petrolium and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), with its constituent members has chalked out a comprehensive drilling programme using drillship 'JOIDES Resolution'. This programme is supposed to carry out drilling and geophysical logging In Goa Offshore; KG and Mahanadi Basins and in Andaman Sea. Experts from United States and India will jointly conduct various studies on the drill cores on board the JOIDES Resolution. Once the samples are collected on board, the scientists will carry out the task such as cores collection, preservation, sub sampling, onboard analysis. This maiden venture of NIO's participation in Ocean Drilling in Indian waters, opens new avenues for NIO by having access to data from long cores (>200m) for multidisciplinary studies such as estimation gas hydrates resource, nature (Thermogenic/biogenic) of methane gas, physical properties to ascertain the velocity structure and thickness of the gas hydrate zone and free gas within the marine sediments. The samples will also be useful to assess the palaeoclimatic conditions and impact of the release of methane (geohazard assessment). NIO scientists will have an opportunity to interact and collaborate with US scientists in the areas of mutual interest. Both Indian and US Scientists will jointly publish the results of the expeditions. The scientists who have already sailed on first expedition are: Drs. M.V. Ramana, A. Mazumdar and M. Judith, S/Sh. G P. Naik, B. R. Rao, K. Muralidhar, P. Aditya and Ms. Christabell E.G. Fernandes. The others on subsequent expeditions are: Sh. T. Ramprasad, Dr. P. Dewangan and Sh. F. Badasaab, Dr. D. V. Borole, Ms. M. Desa, Ms. P. Rane and Dr. P.A. Loka Bharati.
