INSA Medal for Young Scientists to Dr. Pratima
Dr. Pratima Kessarkar, Project Investigator (DST) of "Late Quaternary variations in paleo-oceanographic records of sediment cores from SW margin of India" has received INSA (Indian National Science Academy) Medal for Young Scientists for the year 2006. She has been working in NIO in different capacities and even completed her Doctorate under the guidance of Dr V Poornachandra Rao in recent past. Using a variety of rock magnetic geochemical and isotopic data from sediment cores of the Bay of Bengal, Dr Kessarkar carried out extensive studies to understand changes in sediment supply and distribution during the late Quaternary. Her work has established changes in sources of sediments and a lack of turbidite activity over the last 12000 years in distal fan, which has implications for organic carbon buried and CO
sequestration from the atmosphere. INSA recognized this contribution for an award. The Academy started honouring the young scientists in 1974 with the aim of distinguishing young scientists of extraordinary promise and creativity who have made notable research contributions in Science and Technology. The INSA Young Scientists Award, considered to be the highest recognition of promise, creativity and excellence in a young scientist, is made annually to those distinguished for these attributes as evidenced by their research work carried out in India. Normally 15-20 works are shortlisted every year for the award. The award consists of a bronze medal. Each awardee is presented a Medal, a certificate and cash prize of Rs. 25,000/-. The awardee within five years of receipt of award, is also considered for a visit abroad with full support for presenting research work at conferences, and/or participating in collaborative / training research projects wherever possible. She has 7 publications in various journals and conferences of repute to her credit since 1998. Congratulations to Dr Pratima for her consistent efforts in excelling in her career.
