Miss Ranjita Harji receives French Fellowship
Miss Ranjita R. Harji, research fellow at NIO has received the French embassy fellowship programme for the year 2006-07. The Science and Technology Service of the Embassy of France in India offer these fellowships for the students involved in the doctoral studies. Ms Ranjita will be working with Dr Jean-Francois Rontani, a Senior Researcher at the Laboratoire de Microbiologie, de Geochimie et d'Ecologie Marine - LMGEM UMR, Marseille, France. Her topic of research will be "Microbial degradation of alkenones: Implications for paleotemperature reconstruction". Presently Ms Ranjita is working on her Ph D thesis "Lipid biomarkers in marine environment" with Dr NB Bhosle. Lipid biomarkers are extensively used in identifying sources of organic matter, community structure, pollution aspect, paleooceanographic studies, etc. They are considered to be more resistant to degradation processes and hence remain unaltered in the sediments for a long time. Congratulations to Ranjita for her achievements and looking forward for her remarkable results from the research work.
