Introduction
This website is a public service by the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa - a constituent research laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India. Information presented in this website is considered open and may be distributed or copied.  Reuse with appropriate byline/ photo/ image credits is requested. This policy covers privacy, information collection practices, disclaimers and security.

Scope of the NIO’s Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy applies only to the National Institute of Oceanography domain “nio.org” or also recognized in parallel as “nio.res.in”.

When you visit the website
A standard Web-log data is collected to use this information to provide better services to the visitors. This information is used to improve the functionality and format of the web pages. For website management and statistical purposes, information such as the domains that access the website, the pages that are accessed most frequently, and traffic during a time of day or week, etc., is collected routinely.

Information Submitted through Web Forms
There are standard online forms wherein the personal information (e.g. name, country, email address, phone/fax number) is asked purely in the interest of responding to the queries. The information collected in the online application form is used for filling-in the vacancies. This is processed to find suitability of the candidates.  The information received in all these forms may be maintained for future communications and analysis but never for sale/ exchange or rent to any other parties.

Sharing and Protection of Information
Under the Right to Information Act 2005 and CSIR Procedures manuals, essential information with whom NIO deals with (e.g. vendors supplying material) is displayed on the website in order to increase transparency and accountability in our activities.

Email Sent to NIO
By sending an electronic mail message (e-mail), you may be sending personal information. In these cases, the recipient of the mail may retain/print the information not only to respond to your request, but also as a record of correspondence. It is always likely that your mail is forwarded to another individual within or outside NIO for participation in the discussion on the subject or possible actions, etc. While the content of the messages are not maintained centrally, the log of incoming and outgoing mails is maintained.

Interaction with Children
Children may find educational data and information on various pages of NIO’s website, and they may interact with any of NIO’s staff whose mail addresses and contact numbers are provided or use the forms for queries, etc. However, no personally identifiable information is collected specific to the children

Web Site Security
For web site security purposes and to ensure that this service remains available to all users, all traffic is monitored and recorded.  Safeguards are in place to identify and prevent unauthorized attempts to access or harm our information systems. Unauthorized attempts to upload or change information (or otherwise cause damage to NIO’s web site) are strictly prohibited, and may be punishable under prevailing law as applicable.  Anyone accessing NIO’s web site is advised that if there is evidence of possible abuse or criminal activity, the results of this monitoring shall be made available to the appropriate officials for possible prosecution.
