Engineering analysis of coastal processes for marine structures and technology development towards marine activities.

  Project Leader:
Mandal, S.

Vision:

To continuously improve our understanding on dynamics of marine environment through engineering approach and transfer the knowledge for the development of ocean engineering projects.

Objectives:

  • Measurements and evaluation of coastal processes for engineering applications
  • Measurements and analysis of waves and currents at selected locations in east and west coast of India
  • Marine geotechnical investigations for EEZ
  • Technology development towards ballast water treatment and management
  • Statistical prediction of climate using canonical correlation analysis
  • Neural networking of ocean dynamic systems
  • Evaluation of directional spectrum of ocean waves from arrays and buoys using the variational and IMLE methods
  • Technology development towards engineering problems pertaining to marine environment

General description:

With the liberal policies of Government of India and towards the trend of globalization, many industries including private minor ports are coming up all along the Indian coast. Before starting any development along the coast, we need proper marine environmental information and thereby estimating the design parameters which are the main input for the design and construction of any coastal and offshore structures, submarine pipelines, etc. Engineering analysis of coastal processes is essential for any coastal and offshore development.

Bio-invasion is one of the major threats to the ecological health of oceans. This necessitates the development of economically and technically viable solutions, which are on the high demand around the word. Ocean engineering plays a vital role in developing such technology through appropriate feasibility studies. Problem solving in the aggressive marine environment is a challenging activity. This needs a thorough understanding of the complexities involved in the processes, development of environmentally and economically feasible technology and continuous monitoring of the performance.

The project team has established the competency in the field of ocean engineering through executing numerous tasks.  The above objectives will be achieved through near shore measurements, adopting novel concepts utilizing latest available technologies and refined mathematical tools.
