    • Multi disciplinary oceanography of the Indian Ocean including its marginal seas (Red Sea and Andaman Sea) and the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean

    • Role of organisms in composition of seawater - Oceanic nitrogen cycle especially redox transformation in low-oxygen waters (denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation – anammox)
    • - Molecular characterization of micro-organisms involved in the nitrogen cycle
    • - Application of enzymatic and isotopic techniques to understand mechanisms and quantify rates of nitrogen transformations
    • - Transport and remineralization of organic matter: Pelagic respiration – formation of turbid layers within OMZs; Benthic respiration – denitrification and sulphate reduction
    • - Coupling of trace metals and nitrogen cycles
    • - Role of iron in production of organic matter (iron limitation of primary production in HNLC regions)
