Salient features of the patent

The most significant claim of this patent is that this strain can degrade the sterically hindered as well as coplanar congeners of PCBs under marine condition. The different congeners of PCBs degraded by this strain are four hexachlorobiphenyls, two heptachlorobiphenyls; six sterically hindered di-ortho chlorinated biphenyls (CB-101, CB-97, CB-141, CB-138, CB-128, AND CB-180), two tri-ortho chlorinated biphenyls (CB-151 AND CB-181) and two coplanar congeners (CB-126 and cb-77).

Main focus of Research :

  • Genetic ecotoxicological studies for evaluation of the impact of genotoxic agent on marine organisms
  • Research and development in regard to waste water management and solid waste management
  • Development of Molecular Biomarkers techniques for  evaluation of the impact of pollutants on the integrity of DNA in terms of the extent of DNA strand breaks in different species of marine organisms (mollusks, gastropods and fishes) as early warning signal of carcinogenesis
  • Evaluation of the level of contamination of the marine environment (water, sediments and biota) by organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated hydrocarbons, PAHs, etc. using GC, GC/MS (Varian GC-3300, MS-Saturn 2200)
  • Evaluation of the effect of neurotoxic contaminants on marine organisms in marine fishes, gastropods, mollusks etc using inhibition of acetylcholinesterase  (AChE) activities as a biomarker of neurotoxic contaminants
  • Biomarker studies concerning Cytochrome P450 1A1 enzyme induction in marine organisms due to xenobiotic contamination
  • Environmental impact assessment with reference to water quality management, identification and quantitation of persistent chlorinated hydrocarbons, toxic metals (Cd, Pb, Mn, Co, Ni, Hg etc) using AAS.
  • Evaluation of the fate and persistence of persistent organic pollutants in the marine environment.
  • Studies on microbial pollution along the sea coast.
  • Effects of organotin compounds on the occurrence of imposex in various species of marine gastropods
  • Development of various techniques for rapid assessment of the coastal pollution using biomarker
  • Bioremediation: - biodegradation of PCBs using marine bacteria
