Mission: To establish communication and computational channels that allow individuals to create products of excellence.
Mandate:
1. Maintain the Local and Wide Area Network. 2. Develop and maintain Office Automation applications. 3. Maintain Computational facilities.
National Institute of Oceanography has a tier-I data centre which hosts all servers on the LAN and WAN. This is in the process of being upgraded to a tier-III data centre. The LAN is made up of 10G fiber backbone (Star topology) and a 1G Cat6 distribution. The internet connection at HQ is 20 mbps. The three Regional Centres at Mumbai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam are connected with a 2 mbps MPLS VPN link each to HQ. Facility management of this system is outsourced.
Office Automation at NIO is based on Lotus Notes 8.01. While some of the development is done by dedicated staff, some component of the development is also outsourced.
Computational facilities are mostly workstation based. All servers needed by the IODC to host data on the website are also maintained in this setup. NIO also has a LS-NUMU-A350-S Altix 350 Numalink High Performance Compute (HPC) System.
