Seafloor Classification

Why Seafloor Classification?
The ocean floor acts as interface between the oceanic lithosphere & hydrosphere, and the interaction (i.e., exchange of mass and energy) zone for the processes are provided by the boundary layers.

How can we explore the Seafloor?
  • Application of multi-beam and single-beam echo-sounder.
  • In India NIO installed first deep water multi-beam system onboard ORV Sagar Kanya (1990).
  • Multi-beam system also acquires backscatter data, which provides fine scale parameters of the spatial & temporal seafloor processes.
