Title: Observations of sea level and surface meteorological data from coastal locations

Project Leader:
Desai, R.G.P.

Vision:

To understand surface meteorological and coastal sea level variability at different locations.

Objectives:

  • To develop state-of-the-art instrumentation for accurate measurement and real time reporting  of surface meteorological and sea level data from coastal and estuarine locations for scientific studies and operational applications.

General description:

Presently Indian coastal sea level data is not easily accessible. Further, available surface meteorological and coastal sea level data do not have sufficient temporal resolution for many scientific studies. The systems designed and developed under this programme provide data at fine temporal resolution and have the capability of real time reporting on the Internet.

Scientific components and achievements :

Surface meteorological and sea level data at fine temporal resolution are vital for applications such as forecasting of sea state, validation of satellite derived data and study of estuarine and coastal processes. Our systems have been successfully used for detection of tsunami from the Atlantic Ocean and Arabian Sea
