Vijaydurg
Onshore exploration brought to light a
dockyard about 3 km from Vijaydurg on the
riverbank of Vaghotan. The length and width
of the dock is 108 x 69 m respectively.
The entrance of dock is 7 m wide made of
dry masonry. Important findings include
a number of Indo-Arabian type stone anchors
around the dockyard, a triangular anchor
lying on the eastern side of the dockyard.
Seven Indo-Arabian types of stone anchors
have been used as the lintel of the niches
of the outer wall of the fort, two Indo-Arabian
anchors lie near the present jetty and one
Indo-Arabian anchor in the village.
Offshore explorations in Vijaydurg waters
revealed a structure on the western side
of the fort. The structure extends EW and
turns to a NS direction. It measures 122
m in length and 7 m width and 3 m height.
Different sizes of stone blocks have been
used for the construction. Probably the
structure was constructed for protection
from enemy ships as well as to protect the
fort from wave and current actions.
